Because the #topteam consisting of Sandro Urban, Monica Wolf, Eric Sanches Simões and Gabriel Nicoletti ensures in many ways that our planet will still be as livable tomorrow as it is today. In this interview, they tell us exactly what that looks like and how their work changes the lives of local people both directly and indirectly.

What have you achieved as a team?

“We work every day to achieve excellence for our environment. The goal: to educate our employees and community about the environment and empower everyone to take better care of our planet.
For example, we have reduced our use of single-use plastic: By distributing reusable alternatives, we save 30,000 plastic cups per month. In addition, we monitor air quality in the shipyard around the clock. And if the measured value ever exceeds the permissible norm, vehicles or equipment are inspected to immediately reduce negative effects. But our focus is not only on air quality: in addition to monitoring the amount of waste generated and destined for recycling or storage, and atmospheric emissions, we constantly keep an eye on the quality of river water, wastewater from the treatment plant, living organisms in the water, and underground water resources at our site.
One of our most important tools? Informing and raising awareness. For example, we hold training sessions for all shipyard employees on the 3 Rs of sustainability: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. In this way, we have succeeded in raising employees' awareness of environmental protection, for example in saving water and electricity or separating waste correctly - and not just in the company, but also at home.
But that's not enough for us: We also look after the surrounding communities. That's why we carry out measurements of ambient noise, for example. We also cooperate with the community regarding environmental education: We provide knowledge such as measures to prevent the spread of the dengue mosquito or instructions on how to recycle waste to reduce the volume of landfills.”

How did you achieve this together?

“We brainstorm together, we decide together, and we implement our ideas together - this not only boosts our team's performance, but also fosters a collaborative work environment. In our eyes, good teamwork is characterized by three aspects:

1.     constant communication and recognition

2.     no room for internal competition

3.     focus on achieving goals

In concrete terms, for example, we have made sure that the content of our training courses is presented in an interesting way for our employees. To do this, we used real examples, presented tangible results from the shipyard, and covered as many different topics as possible - all in a simple and understandable way, without technical terms or complicated explanations. In this way, we were able to raise awareness among all our target groups and encourage our colleagues to develop new habits regarding the use of natural resources.”

What does your performance mean for thyssenkrupp?

Our results not only have significance for thyssenkrupp: We are jointly designing a project that has the potential to protect our natural resources in Brazil. We are reducing environmental risks and the likelihood of accidents; equally, we are improving the conscious use of energy and material resources. We are helping to increase the knowledge of employees and local residents - and creating a collective sense of responsibility for our planet. In the long term, this improves the quality of life for people here on site.

And don't forget: We are thyssenkrupp. Our initiatives improve our Group's reputation locally, strengthen our international competitiveness and contribute to the growth of the organization. Current goals for the near future? Obtain zero waste certification and reduce our CO2 emissions. In this way, our past and upcoming measures will position thyssenkrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul as a model shipyard for environmental protection.
