Today we are introducing you to colleagues from various digital areas within our group of companies. They report on how digitalization shapes their day-to-day work, what exactly they are working on, and what makes it exciting for them.

#GENERATIONTK means continuous development and movement for me, so making use of the time and being a pioneer.

Sümeyra Ünal
Data Scientist, Digital Technology Office, thyssenkrupp Materials Services

You work in the field of data science. What do you do there?

We support the business to make more rational decisions. We use exploratory analysis of data to discover hidden and complex relationships. One important project, for example, is our hedging project. Falling stock market prices cause inventories to lose value. The aim is to compensate for this loss through stock market transactions. To do this, we analyze stock market prices and then use machine learning to decide when to trade on the stock market.

What makes working at thyssenkrupp exciting for you?

The great thing is: As a Data Scientist, I don't always work on the same topic. On the contrary, I work on many different topics – from logistics data to stock market financial data. Working in such a broad field makes me very happy and makes my job particularly attractive to me.

What does #GENERATIONTK mean to you?

I might be a bit sentimental about this question. thyssenkrupp is much more to me than a place where I earn money. I feel comfortable and as part of the team. This is my first job after a long time, and on top of that it’s in a foreign country. You can imagine how difficult that is. But everyone here gives me a warm welcome. And #GENERATIONTK means continuous development and movement for me, so making use of the time and being a pioneer.

What I like most about my job is the discovery part, when you have a brand new set of data that needs to be changed and rebuilt in a totally different way - it’s a craftsmanship process.

Colleagues describe you as a ‘tech geek’. Do you see yourself that way, too?

Well, I am into tech, but I mix digital and analogue technology. I have a physics background (mostly theoretical physics) and while I enjoy quantum mechanics and quantum computing, I love the tube valve technology used to build early computers in the ’50s and music power amplifiers.

Together with my colleagues, I ensure that data is collected and parsed, i.e. structured, properly. This way, we help the analysts in our team with their analytical job. When I write code I speak a lot with the computer, generally asking why the program is not working.

What do you like most about your job?

The discovery part. Sometimes you are dealing with standard data, but you can also have a brand new dataset that needs to be parsed and rebuilt in a total different way. It’s a sort of craftsmanship.

What does #GENERATIONTK mean to you?

I find thyssenkrupp a very peculiar company, in a quite positive way. It’s big, maybe a little bit fragmented, but here you can feel the people are its strength. People are the main part of the company and the well-being of the people is a key element in the thyssenkrupp management mindset.  The management here in Gdansk is very good, and on the corporate level, I like the eco way the company is following.

The ability to turn complexity into simplicity through technology is a true testament to the potential of digitalization, and it's what my colleagues and I cherish most about our work.

Mohini Kirane
General Manager Digitalization, thyssenkrupp Industries India Pvt Ltd.

You work in the field “Automation & Digitalization” - what do you do there, exactly?

In the dynamic world of "Automation & Digitalization", our team of five is at the forefront of revolutionizing industries through innovative projects. Our role encompasses software programming, commissioning, testing, and devising strategies to enhance efficiency and accuracy in project outcomes. We're dedicated to reducing manual efforts and time while ensuring impeccable results that drive industries forward. Our expertise spans a wide range of areas including PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), DCS (Distributed Control System), HMI (Human-Machine Interface), data analysis, excel-based automation, AI-based solutions, using O365 apps for various projects and many more.

How digital is your daily work and what do you like most about it?

Our daily work is deeply entrenched in the digital world, where we harness an array of technological tools, such as Excel-based automation, Power BI visualizations, and Grafana interfaces. In a recent project, we fused advanced programming languages and AI algorithms to formulate a solution that not only forecasted values but also provided insights into the future behavior of the system. The fusion of dynamic dashboarding and real-time data visualization not only empowered stakeholders but also enabled them to make astute decisions, consequently enhancing operational efficiency.

This digital journey has been exhilarating, as we continue to push the boundaries of what technology can achieve. The satisfaction lies in witnessing intricate systems fall into place, resulting in solutions that not only meet but exceed expectations. The ability to turn complexity into simplicity through technology is a true testament to the potential of digitalization, and it's what my colleagues and I cherish most about our work.

What does the #GENERATIONTK mean to you?

To me and the whole team, #GENERATIONTK embodies the spirit of innovation and progression that characterizes our era. It's the collective drive to push boundaries and explore uncharted territories in the realm of technology. In an era where technology is the cornerstone of change, we are the torchbearers of this generation, tasked with transforming industries and shaping the future. #GENERATIONTK encapsulates our commitment to harnessing the power of automation, digitalization, and cutting-edge technologies to redefine what's possible.
